From the streets and back to the streets with a message of hope

The Mthunzi Cultural Team of Lusaka has taken part to the just concluded ASSITEJ World Performing Arts Festival in Cape Town, South Africa from 17 – 27 May 2017. They have presented Maloza, a play inspired by the Jungle Book of Rudyard Kipling. Maloza is a boy growing up in the jungle, where he finds friends and enemies, in a situation symbolically reproducing life in the streets, where most of the young actors spent some years of their life. Now they are proudly going back to the streets with a positive message of hope. In this clip we see an excerpt from the final scene, where Maloza with the help of his friends kills the Tiger, representing the Evil that is in us and around us. There are still many questions in his hearts, but he is ready to face them. It was the forth show in three days. Hundreds of spectators, most of them representing youth theaters associations and training schools from around the world, were seated on the stairs going up to the ArtsCape, the most prestigious theater and Opera House in South Africa. After the show the Mthunzi boys received a standing ovation from most of the present.
The International Association of Theater for Children and Young People (ASSITEJ) holds its Congress and Festival every four years in a different part of the world.
